Getting ready for a trip to Japan is more than just packing a suitcase. You also need to arrange your mobile data for when you land.

For Google Pixel owners, the easiest way to get connected is by using the phone's built-in eSIM. An eSIM, or embedded SIM, lets you add a data plan from a provider without needing a physical SIM card.

This guide covers everything from pre-flight checks to activation after you arrive, ensuring your Pixel is ready for your adventure in Japan.

What Should You Check Before Buying a Japan eSIM for Your Pixel?

Before you purchase a Japan eSIM, a few quick checks will save you considerable trouble later. Taking a moment to confirm your Google Pixel's compatibility and carrier status ensures the eSIM you purchase will work the moment you need it. These steps are essential for anyone planning to use an international eSIM.

Verifying Your Google Pixel Is eSIM Compatible

First, you need to confirm your specific Google Pixel model actually supports eSIMs. While most models from the Pixel 3 and newer are eSIM-ready, some devices purchased directly from carriers might be exceptions.

The easiest way to check is in your phone's settings:

Settings > Network & Internet > SIMs.

If you see a "+" symbol or an option to "Download a SIM instead," your phone is compatible.

You can also dial *#06# in your phone app. If you see an "EID" number on the screen, your Pixel supports eSIMs.

Confirming Your Google Pixel Is Carrier-Unlocked

A Japan eSIM will only work if your Google Pixel is carrier-unlocked. A locked phone is tied to the original carrier's network and won't accept a SIM or eSIM from another provider. The most reliable way to check is by contacting your home carrier and asking them directly. Alternatively, you can insert a SIM card from a different carrier; if your phone gets a signal, it's unlocked. You can't use an international travel eSIM without an unlocked device.

Or, alternatively, go to:

Settings > About phone > SIM status / Carrier lock / Network lock

  • If it says “No SIM restrictions,” your phone is unlocked.
  • If it says “SIM locked” or displays a specific network name, your phone is locked to that carrier.

Choosing and Purchasing a Suitable Japan eSIM Plan

With your Pixel confirmed as compatible and unlocked, you can now choose a flexible data plan for your trip.

At Amigo eSIM, we offer several eSIM plans for Japan to fit any travel style.

When making your choice, consider:

  • How much data will you actually use?
  • The length of your trip (plan validity).
  • Whether you need a local phone number (most of our plans are data-only for maximum value).
  • The excellent network coverage is provided.

As soon as you purchase a plan, we will send you an email with your activation details, including a QR code and manual setup codes.

How Do You Install the eSIM on Your Google Pixel?

You should install the eSIM profile on your Google Pixel before you leave for Japan. This process requires a stable internet connection, like your home Wi-Fi, to download the profile onto your device.

Don't activate the plan just yet. The goal is to have it installed and ready to switch on when you land. Your Pixel offers several different methods to accomplish this.

And by the way, the eSIM won’t get activated before connecting to a local network, no matter how hard you try.

Method 1: Using a Screenshot of the QR

This is the fastest and easiest way if you don’t have a second device.

  • Go to the “Settings”
  • Tap on Network & Internet
  • Select SIMs
  • Tap on “Set up an eSIM”
  • Tap on Scan from photo and upload the screenshot of the QR Code
  • Follow the installation steps of your device

Method 2: Scanning the QR Code

First things first, you need to make sure that you have a strong and stable connection during the installation process of your eSIM.

The most common method is to use the QR code sent by your eSIM provider.

On your Google Pixel, follow these steps:

1) Scan the QR with your Camera

  • Open your Camera app.
  • Scan the QR code.
  • Tap the link that appears on the screen and follow the on-screen instructions.

2) Start with the Settings App

  • Open your Settings app
  • Tap Network & Internet and then SIMs
  • Press the "+" icon or "Add SIM"
  • Select "Download a SIM instead?" and tap "Next"
  • Scan the QR code from your provider's email with your phone's camera
  • Follow the on-screen instructions to download and install the eSIM

It's a good idea to label the eSIM (e.g., "Japan Data") so you can easily identify it later.

Method 3: Using a Manual Activation Code

If you can't scan the QR code for any reason, you can use the manual activation details instead.

In the same menu where you're prompted to scan a QR code, look for a link that says

"Need help?" or "Enter code manually."

This will open fields where you can enter the SM-DP+ Address and Activation Code. Simply copy and paste these from your provider's email.

Your phone will then download the eSIM profile just as it would with a QR code.

What Must You Do Immediately After Landing in Japan?

As soon as you've landed in Japan, it's time to activate the eSIM you already installed. This final step connects your Pixel to a local Japanese network, providing you with immediate mobile data.

Follow these steps in order to ensure your plan starts correctly and your phone uses the new eSIM for internet instead of your home plan.

How to Activate Your Japan eSIM Profile

When you're ready to use data, you need to enable your Japan eSIM. Go to Settings > Network & Internet > SIMs. You'll see your primary SIM and the new Japan eSIM you labeled earlier. Tap the Japan eSIM and toggle the "Use SIM" switch to the "On" position. Your phone will then start searching for a local network. This is typically when your plan's validity period begins.

Enabling Mobile Data and Roaming for Your eSIM

Once the eSIM is enabled, you need to allow it to use data.

In your Japan eSIM's settings, make sure the "Mobile data" toggle is on. You also need to enable the "Roaming" toggle for this specific eSIM.

Don't worry—while "roaming" sounds expensive, it's required for a travel eSIM to connect to partner networks abroad. You won't be charged extra for this; it's simply how travel eSIMs function. Ensure data roaming for your home SIM remains disabled.

Setting the eSIM for Mobile Data Usage

To avoid expensive data charges from your home carrier, you need to configure your Pixel to use the Japan eSIM for all internet traffic.

In the main Network & Internet settings menu, find and tap on "Mobile data." From the list of available SIMs, select your Japan eSIM.

This makes your new eSIM the exclusive source for mobile data, so you'll only use the plan you purchased for your trip.

How Can You Best Manage Your eSIM and Home SIM Card?

Managing both your new Japan eSIM and your primary home SIM is the key to maximizing your Pixel's dual-SIM capabilities. You can enjoy affordable local data in Japan while remaining reachable on your regular phone number, giving you the best of both worlds. Configuring this correctly helps you avoid surprise roaming charges and keeps things simple.

Using Dual SIM to Keep Your Home Number Active

Newer Google Pixel phones support Dual SIM Dual Standby (DSDS), meaning your physical home SIM and your Japan eSIM can both be active simultaneously. By keeping your home SIM enabled (with its data roaming turned off), you can still receive calls and texts on your normal number.

In your Pixel's settings, you can assign roles: set the Japan eSIM for "Mobile Data" and your home SIM for "Calls" and "SMS." This is perfect for receiving two-factor authentication codes or allowing people from home to reach you.

Important Tips for a Smooth Experience

For optimal setup, follow these simple tips. First, always install your eSIM before you travel, while you still have a reliable Wi-Fi connection. Second, label your SIM profiles clearly in your phone's settings (e.g., "Home SIM" and "Japan eSIM") to avoid confusion.

Finally, and most importantly, do not delete your eSIM profile from your phone unless you are finished with it.

Most eSIMs can only be installed once and cannot be recovered if removed, which means you'd have to purchase an entirely new plan.

Understanding Potential Network Limitations (4G vs. 5G)

Japan has an excellent mobile network with extensive 5G coverage, but it's wise to have realistic expectations for your connection speed. Depending on your Pixel model and eSIM plan, you might be limited to 4G/LTE networks. Some eSIM providers don't have 5G roaming agreements with Japanese carriers, or older Pixel models may not support the necessary 5G bands overseas. Before you purchase, always check the network specifications from your eSIM provider to determine whether you should expect 4G or 5G speeds on your trip.
